Ritual Journaling

Many of you know that I am involved with a pagan based student group we started on my campus. We are not doing a ritual on Samhain this year. Instead, we are holding a masquerade with another student group. Because we are not doing a ritual, something (I’m assuming one of my animal/spirit guides) prompted me to post about an alternative for those that don’t have another way to celebrate the Sabbaths. I would like to introduce to you Ritual Journaling.

I will provide a link as well as the example below of how I have done this in the past.

The way I hold Ritual Journaling is much like how I do powerful spells ( or for some people spells in general).

First I gather my supplies( normal for me with general spell work) – Supplies include my BOS ( so currently my tablet), Incense, candles, any materials for spells I wish to do that coincide with the Sabbath, my journal or piece of paper I wish to do the ritual with and a writing utensil that won’t give out and that will only be used for the purpose of ritual journaling.

Second I find a comfortable spot to hold my Ritual (normal for my spell work)- Now this could be in your house, outside your house, alone in a room where you won’t be disturbed or in a room with people who know what you are doing. I usually do the latter, but before I lived in my own place I would find a quiet spot alone.

Third I cast a circle( not so usual for me)- usually, I don’t feel the need to cast a circle except when working with powerful spells, but during a Ritual Journal my focus is not on my energy and directing it but reflecting on the holiday. Because of this, it is important to erect a circle around you. For me, I simply without voicing anything visualize a circle around me and draw energy to that area until I feel the energy surrounding me. If you are someone who is uncomfortable with this, then you should sit and begin writing at this point by detailing how you erect a circle.

Fourth I sit and begin writing my Ritual, starting with ” The circle has been cast…” Then it is usually a free write. If you are keeping the journal entry then date it so that you remember when and where it is from.

Fifth ( this is an optional part)- I work really well with fire and spirit. So when I do journal rituals I usually burn the page as an affirmation that what I have written will happen. Sometimes I make two copies so that I remember what I reflected on. I also do my spells at this point bc I have a tendency to work with fire for most spell work.

Sixth I take down my circle- this is essentially Step 3 but in reverse.

And it’s as simple as that. This can take varying lengths of time. I have a difficult time meditating but often find myself falling deeply into one during these times, so be sure to give yourself time to do this or at least set a timer.

And then here is the link for further guidance and also cutewitch772 on youtube does this so it may be beneficial to seek out her videos :

Switching Pantheons for Workings

If I am not resonating with a deity on my chosen path when I am doing a particular working whether spell, potion or charm, I am not going to risk the outcome having ill effects because I needed a deity’s help and that deity is the only one from my path that has “power ” over what I am doing. No!!!!! Why in the name of all that is good would I risk it when 1) I am an eclectic and 2) there are a ton of deities that I could invoke with proper respect and blessing and offering.

Yes, I identify myself with the Celtic path because I have always been drawn to it but I won’t force myself to follow a strict following to that path.

Usually, when the deities associated with my path aren’t resonating with me I seek out a deity from my first path, the Hellenic pantheon. My workings always turn out.

Remember magick is all about the intent not following a strict wording from a book or spell kit. Yes, those come in handy when you don’t know how to do it yourself but if it doesn’t feel right down to you very essence you will doubt it and obscure it.

You have a Matron and Patron yet you have more Pantheistic beliefs.

Well, yea…

I see the divinity of God/Goddess as not necessarily as a single being or even two or more being above us. I see the divinity all around us. I see the divine as something we can connect to with meditation and study of ourselves and the world around us. Yea, I am definitely kind of a pantheist.

I don’t see deity as a big man or woman or even both telling me how to live my life and expecting reverence and respect. Yet I do see deity as a helpful representation of the universe around you.

Cernunnos and Brighid are the masculine and feminine aspect of everything there is on earth and in the universe in my eyes. Some pagans wouldn’t agree with me, but hey it is my path.

I’ve always said that if I wasn’t pagan I’d probably be an atheist just because so much of religion revolves around the belief of a deity above us. I see deity as an end to a means for us mere humans to understand this vast world because let’s face it who knows what exactly created us ( as in the universe as a whole and what in all get out started life). See, no one has the exact answer, so to me pledging my life to a deity and saying that you are the benevolent true one, is silly.

I know many pagans dedicate their lives to a deity but I was brought into paganism with the belief that it varied amongst people, groups, and covens how they saw deity. PERFECT  for me. So when I say I have dedicated my life, my matron, and patron, I don’t mean I have dedicated myself to an entity I have never met.  I mean that I have dedicated my life to protecting the earth and the universe to the best of my abilities and all the creatures that call the earth home whether human animal or non-human animal.  I mean, I believe in some higher power but I am not the type of person that would just dedicate my life to some nameless thing that I don’t really know anything about. My brain doesn’t agree with that.

Witchy

Well, I’m definitely not going into detail about this part. Obviously, I’m a witch. 🙂

Eye

This is a reference to the Third Eye Chakra and how this blog is used to educate people on paganism and witchcraft and dispelling the lies that have been spread about it. With this blog, I hope to not only help my spiritual development and boost my thinking of the world in general but also allow others to do the same.

Is Your BOS your Bible?

Short answer: NO!

What is a Book of Shadows (BOS) “a personal diary or journal filled with the spells, rituals, charts, dreams, and notes of information about witchcraft that are important to the owner? This is where a witch records their own personal impressions and thoughts”

My Book of shadows is not a book I live my life by. I think of it as I do my notebook for school ( I’m just a lot more protective of it).  I take notes in it for later reference in my craft and training, but there is a lot more I do with it. A BOS can be used for many things and many people use their BOS to collect all kinds of general information and information specific to there paths. So what are some examples things that you will find in a BOS:

  • General information about paganism.
  • Specific information about your path.
  • List of gods and goddesses and what they represent, as well as what represents them.
  • Little summaries of books you have read while learning and notes that you have on them.
  • Information about witchcraft and your reflection on it and how you plan to use it in your path if you do want to practice.
  • Spells (Personally I have a section dedicated to how to write/ make my own spells ATM. I haven’t really been writing spells down bc I usually just let my magic flow.)
  • I have dream information in mine.
  • I have examples of how rituals and Sabbaths should be done, but I don’t use them. (They were just tools that helped me learn and since one day I will start a Grimoire  I just keep them.)
  • Information on herbs and gardening ( I’m a kitchen/hearth/hedge witch so for me, it makes sense maybe not for you though.)
  • Information on Colors, stones and other things that help us learn about and focus energy frequencies.
  • Definitely have something in there about altar tools and placements.
  • I have meditation, chakra and aura information in mine too.

* If there is interest I can link my online version of my BOS  that is just a collection of data.

Ok so Online BOS. How does that even work? Aren’t you suppose to take that into your circle when you perform the ritual and stuff? So you take your laptop?

Well, it depends. Usually, I have my ritual or spell together and I usually don’t need notes, but when it is really complicated  I have notes.

Currently, I am transferring things into a binder. Just print it off and arranging it as I see fit. You can tell I’m OCD when it comes to thing like this because I’ll make 3 or 4 sometimes more drafts before I make a final copy. I plan on one day having a faux leather bound  BOS but that can be 20 years away before I feel ready to do that or it could be next week that I decide everything is the way I want it to be.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just to be clear there is nothing wrong with having a laptop in a circle. I mean if you are going to get distracted by Facebook then don’t use tech to hold your BOS otherwise who cares. We are in the age of technology so if you think it benefits your path to use it then go for it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You may have heard of a Book Called A Wiccan Bible.  So I have found 2 versions. One that is set up like Scripture, but it is not our bible it’s just something that someone wrote. I have a copy of it because I find it interesting. The Other is pretty much a textbook to teach you things you need to know. Neither is a literal bible though.
